Exceptional Teaching Aides has a Math Window that may be useful in this case. It has braille/print tiles that can be moved around. I've noticed a lot of my braille students have a difficult time with the concept of place value, which makes it difficult for them to use the abacus. I teach them to compute the problems vertically because it's easier, and because it is good practice with aligning the brailler and using proper Nemeth format. If my kids are having a problem staying on the right column, I have them use a piece of paper or a straight edge to cover the numbers they are not working with. This way the kids understand the mathematical process rather than just trying to get the answer. I hope this helps some.

Hi,
To my knowledge, the best way for a braille student to do multiple digit math computations is on the abacus. My plan right now is to convert all vertical math problems to horizontal problems, and teach my 2nd grade Math student to compute problems on her abacus. She does have some difficulty handling the abacus. Is there a better method for handling vertical Math problems?
Thanks,
