Candy and all, as I am an avid braille reader and use it more so then I
know most who do in the workplace, I generally skim the beginnings or
the document provided its not 400 pages, to find how it might be of use
to me.
I would also like to ask based on the numbers for Michigan, and the
other standard provided, is this based on a survey or study done where 8
out of 10 blind children read at these rates, and is their a
standardized test to determine exactly how slow or fast someone writes?

Subject: Re: [AERNet] Braille Reading Rates
TSBVI lists the following information in their Assessment Kit - Reading:
3RD Grade 51 WPM
4TH Grade 58 WPM
5TH Grade 66 WPM
6TH Grade 67WPM
College 115 WPM
There is also a Michigan scale which has different figures:
3rd grade--30 wpm.
6th grade--60 wpm.
9th grade--90 wpm.
High school graduate--120 wpm.
Karen Wolff states that for a braille user to use Braille successfully
in the work place he/she should be able to read at a rate of at least
150 wpm.
I have heard, but don't have a source, that on average the Braille
reader reads 1/3-1/2 the rate of the average print reader. Hope this
helps! Candy Lien, TVI
