Hi Tom!

I have several suggestions with regard to recruiting a braille transcriber
for your school district.

First, contact your local blindness agencies and your state's instructional
resource center for the blind to find out if they are aware of any local
transcribers who might be interested.

Next, contact the National Braille Association
http://www.nationalbraille.org or e-mail NBAoffice at nationalbraille.org or
call (585)-427-8260.

Sources of Custom-Produced Books (
http://www.loc.gov/nls/reference/directories/sources.html ) is a publication
of the National Library Service that lists volunteer braille groups by
state, city, and group name. This list is dated 2001, so it may not be as
helpful as contacting the National Braille Association.

You may also want to contact American Braille Career School:
http://www.brailleplus.net/school
and Vivian Seki at the Northwest Vista Community College Braille Transcriber
Training Program in Texas:
http://www.accd.edu/nvc/areas/braille or e-mail nvcbrail at accd.edu to find
out if any of their graduates might be looking for work and willing to move
to your area.

Finally, you could advertise on the Braille Help listserv (I'd be glad to do
that for you), or you might e-mail the Braille Transcribers' listserv (I
hope it's still at the following address):
BrailleTranscribers at egroups.com

Meanwhile, I encourage you and everyone on this list to recruit transcribers
for the future. I would be glad to share a flyer I developed for this
purpose with anyone upon request.

Good Luck!

Our school is looking for a full time braille transcriber for the 07-08
school year and beyond. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to
advertise or how to seek out such a person? I just put an ad on SPEDEX and
would like to hear some suggestions. I'm starting on my search early
because I know it coulod be tough to find the right person. Where do
transcribers gather?
Thanks, Tom
