[AERNet] teaching slate and stylus

I am interested in gathering any ideas and/or resources anyone may have used
and found helpful in teaching the slate and stylus. I am a student teacher
and will be taking on the task of teaching a fourth grader this skill. I
had the idea of having her bring in her CD's and using labeling tape to
identify them, and also helping her to start an address "box" to keep track
of her friends' addresses and phone numbers. But my question is...do I
begin instruction with such an activity, or should I start with the basics
of having her use the s&s to write the alphabet, then move on to
contractions, etc., THEN get into more functional/practical tasks. My
concern is that I want to capture her interest and keep her engaged.
Any ideas, suggestions, and stories of personal experience would be much
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Tracy Klimaytis
PCO Grad Student
