[AERNet] Braille Reading Efficiency Skills AND Listening skills

Forgive me for combining these two threads. The
suggestions given so far are excellent. I'd just like
to add a little bit and mix it up.

When I worked as a TVI I learned a great thing from
Tony Jepson. He was teaching braille to a new student
who was losing vision quickly. He taught her how to
skim by reading to her as she followed along in the
braille. He'd stop suddenly and her job was to read
the next word. Then he'd pick it up again and repeat
the pattern at random places in each sentence. He
adjusted his reading speed to her ability to track in
the braille. We expanded on Tony's idea to include
improving reading speed with large print, CCTVs, etc.
As students became able to track faster, we'd increase
our reading speed.

If students could read fast enough to track along with
a book on tape, we'd use the variable speed control
very gradually.

We got parent permission to take video of several
students, with varying levels of learning ability,
using various reading media, along with the recorded
books, demonstrating increased reading speed and
comprehension. We presented this material at the CEC
conference in 1997 in Salt Lake City. We called it
AudioAssisted Reading.

Since then, I've spent a fair amount of time promoting
the use of this method with students with reading
disabilities as well. It works well with those
students too.
