[AERNet] braille instruction

Has anyone ever begun braille instruction with a student based essentially on the possibility of vision loss?  I have a couple conditions in mind, FEVR being one of them.  Suppose a child is diagnosed genetically as having something, but has no symptoms, and may in fact never have any.  Would you give braille instruction?
   
  Any thoughts?
