This topic caught my attention. My name is Donna Neibaur and I am
currently enrolled to be a TVI . Prior to my schooling, I taught
piano lessons for many years. Music is an instinctive skill to learn
and most people learn by ear, even when they study notation. This is
why it is so enjoyable for people without vision to learn music. A
fourth grade music student, sighted or not, is learning elementary
music skills through natural instinct. Much of it is verbal and of
course, a piano keyboard provides tactile information. I believe
students who have an interest in music should be introduced in other
ways than music braille alone. Music braille can be taught when they
show certain levels of proficiency in literary and nemeth braille
along with other technology devices. It just becomes another step
along the way, but it should not hinder learning music skills at the
age when they show an interest. I think it also depends on the
reading ability of the braille student. If the fourth grade student
reads contracted braille well, they are ready to learn the music code.
