[AERNet] Diane's echolalia advice

Could the behavior of repeating phrases that he heard earlier be him simply a mental recollection (nonvisual)? I have a student who did the same thing. I figured that he was recalling a past memory, the same way that visual people recall some image in their head. The only difference is that he voices his memory, instead of just recalling it. I had to chuckle the day when Mom or Dad must have stubbed their toe, and he remembered their phrase repeatedly... His memories also have the same inflection and speech patterns of the original speaker. Just like me, his mind would wander when he was doing other tasks. In young kids, it may also be a rehearsal of language that he is internalizing, couldn't it?

Thanks Diane for your advice. I got some other feedback similar to yours regarding how to phrase questions to a child exhibiting signs of echolalia, and how to prompt the correct response so that he learns not to just repeat what I have just asked him. The only concern that I have though, is that this boy also repeats random things his sister and mother say, even when they are not talking to him. He doesn't look toward them when they are speaking (sometimes we just hear them from the next room), but will continue working on his task and just say what they just said a couple of times either immediately after they just said it, or 5 or 10 seconds later.
