I know it's not according to code, but when I teach student place value in that method, I actually put braille dots 1-4 on the next line under the numeral to be identified. It seems to work better than using the code, then trying to get the kid to remember the coding and the concept. When the kid is older and has mastered braille and Nemeth, then I introduce the format codes.

Is the following situation one where I'd use the opening and closing
bold type-face indicator?
This involves a place-value lesson, where one of the numerals/digits
in a series, is underlined, and the student must identify the place
value of the underlined numeral. The brailled math textbook uses the
italics indicator all by itself, which can't be right because it
looks like a decimal point. As an alternative to the change-in-
typeface-bold indicator, I suppose I could use a Transcriber's note
and tell the student which of the digits is underlined.
Any suggestions? Thank you.
