Award questions: ordering plaques and where to deliver them, work status of nominee J. U., unchosen nominees from past years, if there are no nominations

Hi Board,

I have four items to address:

--We have Dennis Tompkins and Rod Haneline for the awards for 2020.  I will
order plaques closer to the conference.  I'm hoping to have them delivered
to the location where they will be presented rather than to my home.  I'm
assuming to the home of the presenter, but that depends on how we want to
create the presentation.  Has Cassie said anything about this?

--What is Julie Unatin's status?  Is she retiring/near?  She was nominated
for the MAER Recognition Award, but I'm thinking, if she is near/retired we
could give her the D&JS Lifetime Achievement Award.

--We have a nomination for the Lifetime Achievement Award from 2018 that did
not get it.  Do we want to consider awarding it this year?  I would advocate
for this particularly if we give Julie the Recognition award.

--If we were to receive no nominations, we should not cast about for someone
to give the award to (my opinion, of course) because this diminishes the
award.  Leanne and I are planning to rewrite the info in our Board Manual
about awards because right now, it is unclear what distinguishes the awards
from each other and how to handle some of what I am asking about above.  Any
ideas would be helpful.

Thoughts?

Roberta

Hi Roberta,

Regarding Julie Unatin...I can tell you that she is not retired, but I'm guessing she may within 5 years, or so.  No telling with Julie, she loves her work!  On behalf of those who submitted her name, I believe she could be given either award, quite frankly.  I will not vote on this with the Board since I was part of the submission.  Hope this helps.

Liz

Hi Roberta,

I agree with Liz about Julie. She is not announced anything about retirement. I also agree that looking for recipients when nobody nominates someone diminishes the significance of the award. These awards are special and should be reserved for people who have made significant contributions to our field in Michigan.

You mentioned that someone was nominated in 2018 for the Lifetime Achievement Award and didn't get it. Who was that? Do we want to reach out to the person who nominated them and ask them to re-nominate? I don't know. It seems to me that they would do so naturally, if the person is still deserving of the award. But people may think that if they have already retired they are no longer eligible, which is just not the case. Look at you, Roberta! You are retired and you still work hard for our field!

I like the idea of the award going to the person who is receiving it, and having them open it on camera? Just a thought. Also, I'm glad you and Leanne are going to look at clarifying the Awards criteria and nomination process.

Just my thoughts. Thanks!
