New APH Product Development Advisor Position

(Low Vision) PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ADVISOR I

Under the immediate supervision of the Director of Educational Product Research, this position contributes expertise and extensive content knowledge in low vision and vision loss for the purpose of product research, development, and management. Working remotely or on-site, the product adviser collaborates and partners with schools, rehabilitation agencies, teachers, experts, medical professionals, APH peers, and others to generate product ideas, provide knowledge in low vision and vision loss to product developers and other APH staff, and assist in the marketing and training of products. Products may include books, a variety of physical objects or educational aides (manipulatives), software, and/or hardware

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.        Solicit new product ideas from customers and experts using various product research methods such as focus groups and surveys; build relationships with customers and experts in the field of blindness and visual impairment.

2.        Conduct initial research relating to the relevance of proposed projects. Maintain knowledge of competitor products and services.

3.        Provide reference and expertise to the Research team in the areas of low vision and vision loss. Knowledge should include lighting specifications, understanding of color perception and contrast, low vision devices and environmental modifications, eye diseases and conditions, and administering of Functional Vision Assessments and Learning Media Assessments.

4.        Represent APH at conferences and training events through attendance, presentations and support of APH exhibition of products. Provide technical support to consumers of current products, as well as designated APH staff.

5.        Prepare scholarly written and oral communications for internal and external audiences.

6.        Monitor sales of products related to low vision and vision loss and recommend product changes or obsolescence.

7.        Serve as an APH liaison to low vision-focused organizations and professionals in a leadership and supportive role. Serve as an accessibility expert in the area of low vision

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree or advanced certification beyond Bachelor's. Post-Master's preferred. Degree must be in an area related to low vision or vision loss.

Seven (7) or more years of experience related to low vision or vision loss.  Classroom or rehabilitation experience is required.

Must have a strong understanding of the use of technologies (both software and hardware) in instructional, rehabilitation, and home settings.

Must show experience in leading teams, being able to communicate, compromise, and work across departmental lines while insuring successful completion of projects.

CLVT or CVRT required

Must be able to travel up to 25% of time.

Must possess excellent verifiable organizational and project/time management experience and skills required in an environment of rapidly changing priorities.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook. Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Adobe Acrobat, internet browsers, and knowledge of assistive technologies.
