As chair of the Awards Committee, I do inform the nominator that their
person did not get chosen to receive the award. It would be good to be sure
this is n the manual information. Also whether we will consider the
nomination in subsequent years. I do not think it makes sense to have
someone resubmit. It would just be the same info. We as a Board have to
decide whether to choose the person in later years.

Hi,
Beth, I know the person who was nominated and the nominator. I doubt that
person would think to nominate again especially since both people are now
retired. I am curious when one does nominate someone, do we notify them that
we are not accepting/awarding (not sure how to say that) their nomination? I
ask because the person who nominated has nothing to do with MAER. If we
don't notify nominators that we aren't accepting their nomination and that
they can again nominate the person in the future, they probably don't know
that is an option. Just food for thought and another thing that I think
Roberta and I should clarify in our procedure manual on the subject.

Hi Roberta,
I agree with Liz about Julie. She is not announced anything about
retirement. I also agree that looking for recipients when nobody nominates
someone diminishes the significance of the award. These awards are special
and should be reserved for people who have made significant contributions to
our field in Michigan.
You mentioned that someone was nominated in 2018 for the Lifetime
Achievement Award and didn't get it. Who was that? Do we want to reach out
to the person who nominated them and ask them to re-nominate? I don't know.
It seems to me that they would do so naturally, if the person is still
deserving of the award. But people may think that if they have already
retired they are no longer eligible, which is just not the case. Look at
you, Roberta! You are retired and you still work hard for our field!
I like the idea of the award going to the person who is receiving it, and
having them open it on camera? Just a thought. Also, I'm glad you and Leanne
are going to look at clarifying the Awards criteria and nomination process.
Just my thoughts. Thanks!

Hi Board,
I have four items to address:
--We have Dennis Tompkins and Rod Haneline for the awards for 2020. I will
order plaques closer to the conference. I'm hoping to have them delivered
to the location where they will be presented rather than to my home. I'm
assuming to the home of the presenter, but that depends on how we want to
create the presentation. Has Cassie said anything about this?
--What is Julie Unatin's status? Is she retiring/near? She was nominated
for the MAER Recognition Award, but I'm thinking, if she is near/retired we
could give her the D&JS Lifetime Achievement Award.
--We have a nomination for the Lifetime Achievement Award from 2018 that did
not get it. Do we want to consider awarding it this year? I would advocate
for this particularly if we give Julie the Recognition award.
--If we were to receive no nominations, we should not cast about for someone
to give the award to (my opinion, of course) because this diminishes the
award. Leanne and I are planning to rewrite the info in our Board Manual
about awards because right now, it is unclear what distinguishes the awards
from each other and how to handle some of what I am asking about above. Any
ideas would be helpful.
Thoughts?
Roberta
