business meeting. Kathleen Gallagher was elected Chair-elect and John
McCann (Maine) is your new Secretary-Treasurer. Many thanks to Michele
McDonall (NRTC, MSU) for her service as your Secretary-Treasurer over the
past 6 years and Adele Crudden (NRTC, MSU) who is now our immediate Past
Chair. Joseph Strechay (Director, PA Bureau of Blindness and Visual
Services) received the 2016 Louis Vieceli Award. He wasn't able to join us
in person, but after our Skype attempt failed, he looked good on my
smartphone via Facetime and sounded great with a microphone held to its
speaker. The AER membership was treated to a special general session on
Employment. This was a "victory" for the Division as we got to show off to
the AER membership just how good is our work and how much the entire
membership plays a key role in the employment of our consumers. Our panel
of four with yours truly moderating presented on Transition, employment of
the Older Blind, the role of O&M in employment, and a variety of research
findings from the NRTC, including work with employers. We held a successful
follow-up roundtable discussion on employment the following afternoon.
There were a dozen or so papers related to various aspects of employment
presented during the conference. We hope to increase this number at the
next biennial conference in Reno, NV in 2018, so start planning to be there
and if you wish to present, please submit a proposal when the time comes.
Finally, your division goals for 2016 - 2018 includes service to you and the
overall AER membership and continuation of our theme of sharing with each
other what we do. This includes increasing the content of our web site.
