Happy Tuesday Everyone!  I hope your semesters are wrapping up well.

I am looking for information specific to music braille.  Is anyone aware of any state specific or university specific credential/endorsement?    I know there is a music braille transcription course through NFB/LOC and through CNIB while I am looking to see if there are other state/university specific options.

Are you or do you know anyone who is a Braille Music guru?

Would appreciate any suggestions/information you could send my way.

Thanks!
Chris

I don’t know of any credentials or endorsements for TVIs in the US; there isn’t one required or offered in PA as far as I  know. The CEC standards include one that says “Obtain resources, including published curricula, for braille codes currently in use” BVI.5.S2 but the word “music” isn’t anywhere in there.

As far as resouces . . .

I’d point you to MENVI, the Music Educators Network, which often presents at the CTEBVI conference.

I don’t know how active the National Resource Center for Blind Musicians is any more, but here’s the link to their resources page, last updated in 2020:

You can still purchase “Who’s Afraid of Braille Music” from Bill McCann at Dancing Dots, which is a nice little overview of how brl music works:
https://www.dancingdots.com/prodesc/whosafraid.htm https://www.dancingdots.com/prodesc/whosafraid.htm

Jenny Wheeler, the pres (former pres?) of Arizona AER has been my knowledgeable source for braille music info for teachers; not sure if she’s on this listserve or if she’s still involved in music these days. Anyone know?

Otherwise, my braille music guru as far as general info is Jordie Howell, who is the chair of the braille music committee for ICEB. She lives in Australia so not a source of info about the US education system, but really connected to the braille music world. https://iceb.org/music.html https://iceb.org/music.html

UKAAF has a page that includes a 10 minute video/PPT about brl music: https://www.ukaaf.org/sectors/#music https://www.ukaaf.org/sectors/#music

Hope this gives you a start!
