October was awareness month-what did your organization/school do to recognize it?

I am enjoying all of your responses so far.

Here's a new question to generate ideas.

October is Disability Awareness Month and includes White Cane Awareness
Day (10/15) and Disability Mentoring Day.

So, wanting to know and share what we all did this year to celebrate,
create awareness, and increase opportunities for those we serve.  This
will give us all ideas for next year.  Please share....

Hello all,

I am not in the same role that I was prior when I joined, I worked in Florida prior, currently working for AFB in Huntington, WV.

I am responding to Sylvia's question.

I wrote 2 articles for AccessWorld specific to Employment and VR:
National Disability Employment Month (Employment resources and quotes from interview of Kathy Martinez) article:
http://www.afb.org/afbpress/pub.asp?DocID=aw110603

(co-authored with Lee Huffman) Tips on navigating VR article:
http://www.afb.org/afbpress/pub.asp?DocID=aw110602

I wrote a blog for FamilyConnect:
http://www.familyconnect.org/blog.asp?BlogID=2&BlogEntryID=87

We also launched something called the "Job Seeker's Toolkit" which I wrote over the past year or so.  Check it out, it is free, you just have to register as a user on AFB CareerConnect.  Takes a minute.

I participated in a local White Cane Day activity where I worked a booth for AFB.

Hope you are all doing well!

Our town mayor wrote a proclamation for October 15.  It was the first time the town had recognized the day and the significance!

Hi!
In SW Florida, my agency formed a team for the local FCB Visionwalk on White Cane Day. It was fun. Very casual & low key. Not quite sure what awareness was raised because it felt like another instance of "preaching to the choir." don't get me wrong - the event was good but the marketing partnerships could have been diversified to attract someone other then the eye docs & retina specialists.

The program I run participated in Disability Mentor Day partnering with our local career & service center. They hosted workshops for employers as well as job seekers. There were community networking sessions as well as informational booths about services for people with disabilities. It was the first year of ever hosting something like that. It was hugely successful.

The kids in my program started preparing each other for mock interviews as well as those that were ready had to go to a supermarket (with their cane) ask for help and explain sighted guide to the customer service rep. This lead the GM to inquire about a brush-up inservice training for his staff about B/VI, he was even interested in having the teenagers there as co-presenters.

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind, in partnership with the state
chapters of ACB and NFB, had a While Cane Celebration at a park in
Homewood Alabama. Local school children were invited and there were fun
games and activities. The mayor was present. Not only did the event
raise awareness, but it gave all of us a chance to work together and to
continue to build relationships. Finding common ground among
stakeholders goes a long way!
