Subject: Research Opportunity for Minority-Serving Institutions
Opportunity for Minority-Serving Institutions to Participate in a Research Project to Benefit Students with Disabilities
AMAC Accessibility Solutions and Research Center (AMAC), College of Architecture, at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), is pleased to invite post-secondary minority-serving institutions to participate in a research project designed to further the persistence and completion of students with disabilities.
An informational webinar will be held on May 7, 2015, at 1:30 PM EDT. Interested MSIs will have an opportunity to learn more and to ask questions. No registration is required. To attend, please go to https://amacusg.adobeconnect.com/cami-msi-research/. The webinar will be recorded and archived for later access.
The project is seeking the participation of 40 minority-serving post-secondary institutions (two-year or four-year) for the period extending from July 2015 through September 2018. Each institution will be asked to identify up to 10 first-year students in each of two academic years (2015-2016 and 2016-2017) with print-related disabilities who are willing to participate through Spring 2018 or the end of their degree program (whichever comes first).
This project, the Center for Accessible Materials Innovation, is supported by a First in the World grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education, U.S. Department of Education that commenced Oct. 1, 2014, and extends through Sept. 30, 2018. The Principal Investigators are Christopher Lee, PhD, Director and Dept. Head of AMAC, and Julie Ancis, PhD, Associate Vice President, Institute Diversity.
The research component will explore the social and psychological challenges and barriers for students with print-related disabilities at minority-serving institutions, and how those challenges and barriers affect the delivery and use of accommodations. The project will gather data to assess the impact of accessible textbooks in EPUB3 format used on mobile tablets, assistive technology, related training and technical assistance on the academic success (i.e., retention, GPA, and academic self-efficacy) of students with print-related disabilities at minority-serving institutions.
AMAC is a nationwide provider of accessibility solutions to colleges and universities. Current members of AMAC are not eligible to participate in this research.
