Hi to everyone,

I am taking a class toward the certification for teaching English language
learners.  I have to write a paper for this class answering a question.  I
was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for resources concerning current
practices used to teach blind or visually impaired students.  Also how do
current practices align with those used for teaching sighted students, and
finally do children with certain eye conditions do better than others?
Thanks for any information.

Susan ... I can't answer your questions about blind
students and ELL, but in general, the better the
development in the first language (L1), the better the
learning of the second language (L2).

As far as eye conditions are concerned, there are some
eye conditions that carry with them a higher risk of
additional disabilities than do others. They would
likely have the same difficulties learning L2 as they
would L1.

Now if Lynne Derus is still here (our resident
linguis), she can probably give us all the definitive
answer!

Madeline Milian at the University of Northern Colorado has background in
both VI and ELL. I'm sorry I don't have her email address, but I'm sure if
you called UNC information, 970-351-1890, they could give you her phone
number.
