I don't see an entry for Malawi in that book, nor for that particular language. I see entries for many other languages spoken in Africa (such as Konkomba, Kabiye, Luganda, Kiswahili, Chibemba, Chinyaja, and more) but not for Chichewa. Hope this helps. And if you find out that there IS one, please let Perkins and NLS know!

Subject: [AERNet] question about African braille

Hi, friends – I’ve asked some strange questions in the past, but this one might top my past history. Does anyone know if the language spoken in Malawi (Africa), Chichchewa (also known as Chewa) has a braille code? I haven’t found anything yet in my rudimentary Internet searches.

Many thanks,

Sheila

Sheila,

I have worked with a few individuals in Malawi through CARE Ministries, and all used English at differing levels of proficiency. This may be one reason they contacted us and is not necessarily reflective of the country as a whole.  That doesn’t really answer your question, but just to let you know if you cannot find the braille code you are looking for, English may be an alternative.
