Hello everyone ! I am a TVI for a school district and was approached by a
teacher who has a child who turns everything upside down to look at it,
from books to completing inset puzzles upside down. Anyone ever have
experience with this? I'm thinking this is a brain (reading disability),
more than an eye, issue, but wanted to know everyone's experiences!
Thank you!
Melanie Sargent
I’m really curious about this as well- I was actually just talking to a teacher about a student who does this as well. She also was doing lots or reversals when writing her letters and numbers and is struggling with reading.

I had students who did this well past age eight. Each one had ocular albinism or albinism. The only other student who did this had brain damage. It was how he saw the world, backwards and upside down! He did learn but it was a big struggle.

Melanie,
how old is your student? I'm wondering if he/she was refered to you as
the local TVI or if you are part of a team that's supporting him.
Is this the first time that folks in the school have noticed this
student's tendency of reading things upside down?
I have a feeling that when I get into next fall's class on working
with people who are blind and also have other disabilities, we'll
cover dyslexia. It's so easy for folks who have not had much exposure
to either to become confused as to the symptoms. Same goes for the
common symptomatic behaviors displayed by some children who are blind
and those falling along the autism spectrum.
I checked out a couple sites aboutthis. The first is written for the
parent's perspective but in prep for an IEP or other meeting of the
minds, it could be helpful. It's written in layman's terms, so perhaps
giving it to your student's parents would be a good thing.
https://www.understood.org/en/learning-attention-issues/
And another site that you or your student's parents might find helpful.
https://www.understood.org/.../dyslexia/different-types-of-dyslexia
Here's praying that you all are able to work together with your
student and keep him motivated, eager and learning/growing.

I learned how to read upside down on the subways of New York. It was
impossible to hold a paper open and hang on at the same time!

Well, isn't dyslexia a condition where perception of what is seen does not coincide with what is really there and this causes the person who has it to have difficulty reading?
