Hi all,
I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend.
I am a newly graduated TVI (Dec 2015), I have been lucky to get a contract with a local school system, which is great, but it also means that I am on my own without anybody to bounce things off of, so I am hoping to get some feed back from some of you with a lot more experience.
I recently conducted a FVA/LMA on a middle school student. The reason for referral was because she has a diagnosed lower visual field loss (and a very slight farsightness, 20/40, which is not corrected by lenses) and her parents are rejecting the results of her psychological test conducted as part of her 3 year eval because they feel her vision might of played a part in her not doing well in the parts that required visual tasks. As a result of my testing, I discovered that her upper and peripheral fields might also be constricted in addition to the lower field loss. My questions are: has anyone had experience with a student with restricted visual fields and psychological testing? What types of accomodations are needed (other than just taking out visual tasks) to ensure the validity of the testing?
Also - I used the Ann Arbor Scanning exercises as part of my testing and the student struggled completing those. I am recommending that the student receives TVI services to work on Bookshare (student is reading at a significant slower rate then her peers), Touch typing and Scanning efficiency skills - Does anybody have ideas of tools/activities I can use/do with student to help her with scanning/reading efficiency?
Thank you in advance,
Oriana
One of the first things I would do is to request a comprehensive ophthalmological exam, including Goldman Visual fields. These will give you a much more detailed understanding of her vision and fields. With those the family, teachers, psychologist, and you will better understand the issue, A technology evaluation should give you good options for testing and accommodation.
