Hello,

Does anyone have any academic references or publicly available price pages
that talk about the cost of Braille Transcription that could be cited in a
paper? I just see papers that say Braille transcription is expensive
without giving any references or actual numbers. In particular, I am
looking for the cost of Nemeth transcription and tactile graphic
transcription.

Thank you,

Brandon Keith Biggs http://brandonkeithbiggs.com/

There was a JVIB article by Corn & Wall in 2002 about braille production, but I’m sure if it mentioned $$ it would be out of date by now.
Production of textbooks and instructional materials in the United States http://www.afb.org/jvib/jvib960403.asp
A Corn, R Wall - Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB), 2002 - Volume 96, No. 4

I know there have been other JVIB articles that look at production of braille in various states (there have been a couple of articles about Texas, I remember) but as far as accurate prices, you may want to contact the National Braille Association and CTEBVI and see if they have general information they can provide.

Otherwise, you can contact a number of braille production places and get a range of prices. You’re right that generally the more “human intervention” that’s needed (tactile graphics, special formatting), the more expensive it will be.

I look forward to seeing if this changes with increased use of Braille Blaster from APH that was designed to use NIMAS to create braille textbooks. Would be cool to document this.

best,
—FM
