Thanks, Janet, for saying this. I agree and I made this point on the AER survey we were sent recently. I appreciate the newsletter but just because an article mentions the word “blind” doesn’t mean it’s newsworthy, accurate, or appropriate.
ELIA has been around for decades—it’s not a new code. There’s an article about it in JVIB in 1996—not research, by the way, just an “FYI” kind of thing. I remember seeing it at a conference in NYC in 1999. Not sure why it’s resurfaced again all of a sudden, but it’s been around for a while.

Thanks for your messages.
I'm glad to hear there's some discussion of guidelines for what's included in that Viewpoint posts (or I hope that's what you mean) because I've seen several articles on technology, etc. that seemed inappropriate for AER to be supporting or reporting, without including some caveats. I'm not sure who develops and 'approves' material sent out as AER's "viewpoint" but more editorial review and guidelines seem appropriate to me.

Well friend and colleagues, I have jumped the gun and fired off an email before reading the rest of the articles in AER Viewpoint. It seems that they have also cited an article from Popular Science that brings out some other issues about ELIA. I have also been informed that a resolution on research ethics is being drafted for AER which will provide us some guidelines about what we provide in our organization’s publication.
I hope my earlier message did not seem totally negative. As with most things there is a positive and a negative side and I would like to see our field discuss topics such as this, and the AER list is a great place to do it.
Those would be exactly my thoughts, as well. We discussed this in my advanced O&M class last night. Bill

I’m dating myself and can’t remember the name of an earlier tactile system, probably in the 70s or earlier. It was based on raised figures similar to this, but I don’t think it ever really took off. Today’s technology would make producing a simple alphabet like this easier, but I still wonder about the population that would be able to get this as a usable system. If people were able to create the raised symbols themselves, it would be easier for them to label and use daily. I can’t see this being really viable for lengthy reading. That’s the reason for contracted braille.
Just a few of my thoughts.

Subject: [AERNet] AER and the ELIA Frames Touch Font
Hi All,
I have noticed the “Product Showcase” below in the AER Viewpoint for the past couple of weeks. I am curious if anyone has had the opportunity to work with this tactile reading system. While I think it has some interesting potential, I have concerns about its effectiveness and the promoter’s use of inaccurate statistics on their website. A reporter form the Smithsonian interviewed me about ELIA. She asked if I knew anyone who had experience with this tactile reading system so I am reaching out to my colleagues in the field to see if anyone might help shed more light on the subject.
Please read the article, visit their web site and let’s start a discussion about this topic.

I am also somewhat concerned about AER promoting this Kickstarter Campaign. Is this something that our professional organization should be supporting without input from the membership?
Thanks in advance for your input,
