Hello,
I have a middle school student with low vision who just got an IPad with the KNFB Reader app. When we tried it it had some problems - it did not recognized printed material written on whiteboard with marker by teacher and it had accuracy issues with a book - I have two questions - is this typical or are there tips/tricks to get around this? Would a stand improve the accuracy of printed documents like worksheets and books. Also, when we went in to the font settings we were only able to enlarge to 60 font, my student prefers 90 font and will be using the app visually more than auditorily - is there any way to get around that? What I did was save the document and opened it on Voice Dream and she was able to get her preferred size that way. Is there a way around this?
Thanks so much for your help.

Hello,
I feel that you are dealing with several problems. The accuracy of the KNFB
Reader is dependent on its camera. Therefore if you are using an older
device the results will not be optimal. Also, like most OCR programs its
stability when taking a picture is critical. Thus using a stand will
greatly improve its results. Finally, the last time I reviewed the
information on the application it was optimized For the iPhone and not the
iPad., Just a suggestion, but if your student is using the device as a low
vision aid, maybe a magnification app would be a better choice.
Hope this helps,

If a student needs font that large then I would strongly encourage working
on listening skills because that really isn't practical in life. 72 font is
1 inch so you are talking about print that is 1.2 inches tall. I also would
not want to use the KNFB Reader on an IPad because it would be very hard to
hold it stable enough to get a picture. I think it would work better on an
iPod Touch or iPhone. I am a regular user of the KNFB Reader and it takes
practice to learn to get good pictures.

Also, the KNFB reader does not work with hand written materials. I don’t know of any OCR programs that do.
I second the suggestion about using a stand to steady the camera, get the angle right and aid in lining up the paper. The KNFB reader also has tilt guidance and let you know if your phone is level and a preview feature that tells a totally blind user whether or not all of the document is in view.
Best,
Greg
