Subject: IDATA - One More Week to Apply

Please help spread the word. If you could forward this final notice (via email, social media, etc.) to those who teach the visually impaired, special education educators who work with BVI students, and astronomy, space science, physics, computer science, or technology educators working with students at the high school level, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks so very much!  Tim Spuck

IDATA Recruitment/Application Information

Recruiting Educators now! IDATA will select 20 educators to participate in the 3-year effort; ten educators from within a 75-mile radius of Yerkes Observatory in southeastern Wisconsin (Tier 1 Teachers), and ten educators from across the U.S. and its territories (Tier 2 Teachers). Eligible educators include those who teach the visually impaired, special education educators who work with BVI students, and astronomy, space science, physics, computer science, or technology educators working with students at the high school level.

Teacher Participant Requirements and Benefits

Tier 1 Teachers

·        Your school or education facility must be within a 75-mile radius of Yerkes Observatory in southeast Wisconsin.

·        Tier 1 Teachers must commit to participating in the project beginning July 2017 through June 2020

·        With the support of IDATA personnel, teachers will recruit students from their school/area to participate in the project. Tier 1 Teachers must also recruit two IDATA Student Leaders who will work closely with the teacher to lead the effort in their school. At least one of the Student Leaders must be blind or visually impaired. NOTE: recruitment need not be done prior to applying for the program. Our goal is to have each participating teacher recruit 10 students.

·        Attend an IDATA workshop each summer at or near Yerkes Observatory. Your travel expenses will be paid for by the grant. The first workshop is scheduled for July 23 - 31, 2017.

·        Throughout the course of the year Tier 1 teachers and Student Leaders will participate two weekend workshops at Yerkes Observatory that will enable them to work together with other members of the Tier 1 team back at their schools. Travel will be paid for by the grant.

·        Tier 1 Teachers must be able to work with their students on a regular basis throughout the course of the school year on IDATA related activities. These activities will be planned and coordinated in collaboration with IDATA personnel. Tier 1 Teachers and students will be supported by IDATA graduate/undergraduate student mentors, as well as IDATA staff through onsite visits and web chats at least twice a month.

·        Tier 1 teachers must provide a letter of support from a school administrator (e.g. Curriculum Coordinator, Principal, Superintendent, etc.)

·        Tier 1 Teachers and students will be recognized as co-developers on IDATA products created.

·        Tier 1 Teachers will receive a stipend of $3,000 each year for their participation in IDATA.

Tier 2 Teachers

·        Your school or education facility must be located in the United States or its territories.

·        Due to the remote nature of the work completed by Tier 2 Teachers, educators with astronomy teaching experience and experience engaging students in astronomy research projects utilizing astronomy image/data analysis software will be given priority, and are strongly encouraged to apply.

·        Tier 2 Teachers must commit to participating in the project beginning July 2017 through June 2020

·        Tier 2 Teachers will recruit students from their school/area to participate in the project. NOTE: recruitment need not be completed prior to applying for the program. Our goal is to have each participating teacher recruit 10 students.

·        Attend an IDATA workshop each summer at or near Yerkes Observatory. Your travel expenses will be paid for by the grant. The first workshop is scheduled for July 23 - 31, 2017.

·        While the time requirement for Tier 2 teachers is significantly less than Tier 1, Tier 2 Teachers must be able to work with their students on a regular basis throughout the course of the school year on IDATA related activities. These activities will be planned and coordinated in collaboration with IDATA personnel. While there may be occasions when IDATA personnel visits Tier 2 schools in person, the vast majority of interactions with students and teachers will take place virtually.

·        Tier 2 Teachers and students will be recognized as co-developers on IDATA products created.

·        Tier 2 teachers must provide a letter of support from a school administrator (e.g. Curriculum Coordinator, Principal, Superintendent, etc.)

·        Tier 2 Teachers will receive a stipend of $1,500 each year for their participation in IDATA.
