Anyone who is planning to come to Louisville next month for the APH Annual Meeting should feel free to attend this year's STEM Consortium meeting. There is no need to pre-register for the STEM meeting and it is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Park Suite, which is on the second floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Louisville (the conference hotel) on Thursday, October 6, at 10:00 AM.Full details are provided below.

Park Suite, Hyatt Regency Hotel, 311 South Fourth Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40202 This meeting will feature a series of presentations on issues related to the development and delivery of accessible curricular  content in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas of the Core Curriculum.

The discussion panel will include some of the leading experts on STEM access from around the country:

  • Volker Sorge is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham, in the United Kingdom. Dr. Sorge wil discuss his research and development work toward making accessible chemical diagrams and other types of STEM content accessible to blind students.

  • Neal Kuniansky is Marketing Director for Duxbury Systems, Inc. He will discuss converting technical material from print-to-braille and braille-to-print for UEB even with Nemeth in UEB, and methodologies for student preparation of material using technical braille 6-key input to prepare print math for a braille illiterate colleague or instructor.

  • Steve Jacobs is President of IDEAL Group, Inc., and has been in the computer industry for over 40 years, including serving as President of IDEAL at NCR Corporation. Steve Jacobs will present an overview and demonstration of the IDEAL Math Writer for Android devices, and also the InftyReader Optical Character Recognition (OCR) application for digital math content.

  • Greg Stilson, HumanWare, is Product Manager for the Braille Products Division. He will discuss the BrailleNote Touch, the world's first Google Certified braille tablet which will soon be updated by version 2.0 of the Touch firmware offering users the KeyMath app.  This app will make the  Touch the first mobile device which is capable of real time translation of entered braille math to perfect print content for sighted teachers and classmates to immediately see on the screen.

  • Dan Gardner is CEO of ViewPlus Technologies, Inc. He will discuss their latest software tools to create and use audio tactile graphics with embossers from ViewPlus. He will show their simplified process to create tactile graphics and audio tactile graphics, so they can be tailored to the end users experience with reading tactile graphics.

  • Dan Brown is Senior Quality Assurance Engineer, Blindness Technologies, for Pearson. He will appear in a pre-recorded video demo of the Pearson Equation Editor which is being newly redesigned as a fully accessible editor for all students who take computer-based assessments. The Pearson Equation Editor will, among other things, provide for Nemeth braille input and output in real time.

  • Rosanne Hoffmann, APH STEM Project Leader, and Ken Perry, APH Programmer and Project Leader, will discuss the latest STEM innovations being develped at the American Printing House for the Blind. One featured technology will be the recently announced Graphiti, the world's first affordable tactile graphics display.

This related meeting will be held in the Park Suite during the APH Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 6, from 10:00 am until 12:15 pm at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. This meeting is free and open to the public. There is no need to register for this meeting.
