Hello all.
I'm trying to get an accurate count of the number of states who current have a B.R.I.T.E. Act in state law or if your state currently has it in the pipeline.
I'd love to hear from you!
I'm in Missouri and the B.R.I.T.E. Bill passed and was signed by our Governor in Aug 2022.
In case you are not familiar with what I am referencing, the Blind Students' Right to Independence, Training, and Education (B.R.I.T.E. Act) originated from the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) in Dec 2020 as a state-level initiative. The NFB provided a model for legislation for individual state Chapters to promote and pursue.
In July 2022, a few of us presented about the initiative and our Task Force at the AERBVI Conference here in St. Louis and we will again present at the Getting in Touch with Literacy Conference in a few weeks. The Task Force had a wonderful collaborative effort and modified the model legislation initially submitted into a robust law making huge waves in our State.
So, please help us get a good understanding of what's happening outside of MO!
Kevin
