Hi,
Does anyone have a suggestion for a lightweight laptop PC that works well
with JAWS and connects easily via bluetooth to a braille display, (APH
Refreshabraille 18)?
Thanks,
Lisa Faret
I will assume that you want a Windows computer. If so, I would recommend a
technology evaluation for your student to determine the exact computer and
appropriate software. Will your student be using Windows 10 or 7? How will
your student be using the computer? Does your student have good strong
computer skills? I have an Acer and use JAWS and a braille display but that
may not be the right computer for your daughter.

Greetings,
I’m a big fan of the HP laptops with the built-in numeric keyboards—excellent for Jaws usage. http://www.ultrabookreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/hp-pavilion-15s.jpg The Pavilion 15s offers solid specs and are more affordable than the competition and the Bluetooth connectivity on them are fantastic-they’re a little heavier than most, and you’ll need to remove some of the manufacturer garbage on them for a more optimal screenreading experience, but they’re a solid option. Whatever you decide, even though Jaws has a laptop keyboard layout—I’m a big fan of teaching advanced Jaws concepts with the numpad.

If you're not married to Jaws, I would suggest using NVDA instead.

I agree it is important to use a full-size keyboard with Jaws. I just bought an ASUS this past summer and have Jaws 17 on it, and it works great! I don’t use a braille display, however. It was on sale at Best Buy, and was very reasonable. This laptop is slim and not too heavy. I have it in a case with a cross-body strap.

For the record—I’m a huge NVDA fan—as long as the individual understands that it is “freeware”, meaning “no technical support” in the traditional sense of the word, I say roll with NVDA as an alternative. It’d fantastic on the web, and is continually improving with Microsoft Office and Google Apps.

Sitting here in a classroom situation where I train VI folks from age 14 to 90 or older, I hate when VR counselors/families... get laptops without even looking at them and expect them to be user friendly to these people. Laptops which use keys to make keys do multiple tasks and/or laptops which have no discernable number pads and or arrow keys irritate me. When the keys are absolutely flat and relatively small, that irritates me too. Whenever I get those laptops to work with, I encourage a person to get a full size keyboard to use especially when these people are new to blindness and/or keyboarding. These new bluetooth mobile keyboards that work with phones and tablets, could probably be an alternative that would work very well. I have a universal mobile keyboard that I like quite well when not using my Apex. I am going to pose a question which is not exactly related to the topic. I believe that desktops and possibly even laptops may become obsolete with the portable keyboards with or without tablets and phones which are just as accessible as computers and a lot more portable. Also, with baby boomers getting older and losing vision, I think people would much rather talk to something or do simple gestures than type. And that doesn't even take devices such as Amazon Echo and apps such as google voice and siri. More and more people are actually working with their phones and tablets to do work from home. What do you think this implies for teaching technology? I am wondering just how necessary it is to teach seniors how to type and use desktop/traditional computers.

Subject: Re: [AERNet] Laptop Compatible with JAWS and Braille Displays
Greetings,
I'm a big fan of the HP laptops with the built-in numeric keyboards-excellent for Jaws usage. <image005.jpg>http://www.ultrabookreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/hp-pavilion-15s.jpg and the Bluetooth connectivity on them are fantastic-they're a little heavier than most, and you'll need to remove some of the manufacturer garbage on them for a more optimal screenreading experience, but they're a solid option. Whatever you decide, even though Jaws has a laptop keyboard layout-I'm a big fan of teaching advanced Jaws concepts with the numpad.

Subject: [AERNet] Laptop Compatible with JAWS and Braille Displays
Hi,
Does anyone have a suggestion for a lightweight laptop PC that works well with JAWS and connects easily via bluetooth to a braille display, (APH Refreshabraille 18)?
Thanks,
Lisa Faret

I agree with Marianne. As users we recommend what we know best. A good tech assessment looks at what is best for each student.
