Suggested electronic handheld magnifier for 5th grade student

Hello Everyone,

I am currently working with a 5th gade student who would greatly benefit

from an electronic handheld magnifier. He will be transitioning to the
middle school next year and will need a portable means of magnification. The
school district is willing to purchase one for him (within a reasonable cost
limit.) I showed them the few that APH carry, but was unsure as to which
brand is best for the student. He is very intelligent and I don't think he
would display any problems using the technology. However, does anyone know
of a brand or certain magnifier that might work best for a 5th grade
student? (Also, it would be great if it was pretty sturdy as I'm sure a boy
his age will drop it a  few times.)

Thank you,

Bianca

We have had success in 3rd and 11th grade with the Senseview Duo. about $1000. Trying Flipper and Onyx with another 3rd grader. These are somewhat portable. The Senseview Duo is handheld.

Hi Bianca -
My understanding has always been that an optometrist should prescribe these types of devices, to be sure that the level of magnification is appropriate ... that's what the APH Envision kit book says. How do other TVIs handle this situation, generally?
