I have a client who is looking for a very bright portable lamp the she can
use for reading and writing. She found an Ott-light rechargeable desk lamp
to be not nearly bright enough. She does not want to use a hand-held lighted
magnifier. I am thinking about suggesting a headlamp. Any other ideas?

Hi Raychel,
Have you tried a crafts store or sewing store, like our local JoAnn's
Fabrics or checked online? There are many great desk and floor lamps that
are very bright and used by people who do fine needlework and crafts. This
might just be the trick in her case. Any good fabric or crafts store in
Spokane would have them. Check the local Spokane JoAnn's Fabrics or check
their Website. Good luck!

If the Ott or Day light lamps at fabric & craft stores are not bright enough, then you might need a halogen (caution with heat of the bulb) or a Big Eye lamp (goose neck) with magnification.

Never recommend halogen.
For portability, and presuming lack of electrical power source, Eschenbach makes a nice portable stand magnifier for writing, Scribolux. Also a simple low budget LED flashlight with at least 8 diodes should work.

I'm not sure why one would say "never" recommend halogen aside from the fact that there is an association with heat as I mentioned in the email below. Lighting is such individual preference, & generally we (4 OTR's) do not make absolute recommendations, but address each client/ pt on a case by case basis. Safety is one of the considerations we certainly take into consideration. We have clientele who use incandescent, florescent, LED, halogen & Day/ Ott lights to increase accessibility... depending on personal preference & task/ location. Additionally, we have found that yellow filters can also be helpful to increase contrast and seems to brighten the print for the client/ pt.
Re: the Ott/ Day Lights... sometimes the light is not bright enough when running solely on battery. It tends to be brighter when plugged in & more consistent, so might be worth a try if that would work for the client. Might try combining the yellow filter with the Ott light plugged in.
Thanks

The lamp needs to be bright without being plugged in. She did find the Ott
light bright enough when plugged in, but not when running on battery power.
I like the idea of the Eschenbach Scribolux that was suggested, but wish it
was more affordable. The Better Vision Lamp in the APH Lighting Guide Kit
seems terrific and I would love to check it out. I hope they have one at the
international conference!
I will check out the HD Ott light that was suggested and hope that it does
the trick, since that is the most affordable suggestion so far. I am having
trouble finding it on the Ott website or Office Depot, but I will keep
looking.
Thank you very much to all who have replied. Suggestions are still welcome!
