Which states are teaching UEB math? I only know of 2 so curious if anyone
else is? Most know BANA states to stick with Nemeth so always wonder how
the UEB math goes over when suggested for a student from the district.
Thanks

In Indiana this is a case conference committee decision. If the team
decides UEB with UEB math is best for the student that is what is taught
and used. If the team decides UEB with Nemeth is best that is what they go
with. We can order books and state testing materials in either code for
students.

Is everyone aware that the PSAT and SAT exams are in Nemeth?

Yes, many of us around the country are aware of the College Board’s policy and have been active in advocacy concerning this restrictive issue.
AER’s Task Force on the Implementation of UEB has reached out multiple times to the College Board, and specifically to Jill Green, College Board’s Senior Director of their Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). The AER Task Force also authored a lengthy, formal letter which was approved by the AER Board of Directors and sent it to the College Board. I can provide the text of that letter if anyone is interested.
My last actual response from Ms. Green was in late July when I called her to determine exactly what I should report in my comments to the AER Business Meeting at the AER Conference in Reno. She again said that they are producing their tests only in Nemeth with UEB, but she did vaguely indicate that they will be revisiting their policy in the future. That is what I reported in the AER business meeting as well as to participants of the roundtable on UEB that Frances Mary D'Andrea and I conducted at the conference.
Jill Green can be reached directly at 212-713-8070 tel:212-713-8070. The only email address she provides is ssd@collegeboard.org mailto:ssd@collegeboard.org, which is merely a general address for all communications to SSD.
We strongly encourage any professional or parent or student who is impacted by this to contact the College Board and explain the issues their policy causes.
If anyone reaches the College Board, please share your experience and any news you learn.

Our testing coordinator contacted me recently with questions from a survey
she received from College Board that appear to be related to this. Note
College Board also produces all of the AP exams.
It included the following questions:
When it comes to teaching math to students with vision impairment who
require braille, which of the following systems does your school currently
use at each grade level? (select one answer per row)
Nemeth code
UEB math
both
My Response:
Interesting how this question is worded. I was actually on the state
decision committee for this decision making process when we transitioned to
the UEB code. Indiana's statewide policy is the decision of braille code
for mathematics (UEB or Nemeth) is a case conference committee decision for
each student. It is not determined by grade level, but based student need
and what is best for the student.
They also asked what assistive technology our students with visual
impairments were using. That is a very broad question so I listed
everything I could think of that I have had students use in recent years.
Unfortunately, this survey was sent to testing coordinators (often Guidance
Counselors and Assistant Principals) who usually have no idea what our
students use. Hopefully, other coordinators reached out to the TVIs in
their districts as well for help in answering these questions!
Mary Nelle, thank you for sharing that contact information. I'll be
reaching out to their office and will share that information on our
statewide listserve for TVIs.
