Dear AER Listers:

BANA recently distributed a press release offering braille copies of The UEB Reader, which is a composite of documents from the BANA website. The response to this offer has been overwhelming, which is incredibly gratifying because it indicates that UEB is definitely on everyone's radar.
As the press release mentioned, The UEB Reader is provided only in hardcopy braille. We produced this braille compilation of documents and UEB examples from our website after hearing from many adult braille readers who do not have access to a braille display, an embosser, or even a computer. This resource was designed for those readers. Everything it contains is also available on the BANA website, which is www.brailleauthority.orghttp://www.brailleauthority.org/.
Kim Charlson has received hundreds of requests for print copies of The UEB Reader. A print copy of this document can be easily produced from a PDF file, which is located on the BANA website. However, if you requested a print copy, you will receive an email that will include a PDF file of The UEB Reader in simbraille. You can then print as many copies as you need. Kim will also send you a BRF file of the document in case you would like to emboss it in braille.
Pease keep in mind that The UEB Reader is aimed at the interest and reading level of adults. It was not designed as a resource for children. The BANA website has an example document of the first chapter of The Wizard of Oz that is produced in UEB. It can be downloaded to emboss or use with a refreshable braille display. That may be more appropriate for younger students on your case load. You can also find a UEB version of Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech and Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, which may be more appropriate for older students. We will continue to add sample documents to our website, so please check back often.
More information about UEB is available on the BANA website at http://www.brailleauthority.org/ueb.html.
Thank you again for your interest in Unified English Braille!
