Hello, again!
Thanks for all the nice comments about the first installment of the legislative/policy update. I'm happy to tell you that Karen Blankenship and Ian Shadrack have joined me in our division's legislative committee.
Here's a second installment, and I hope you all find it useful.

** 1. From CEC Smart Brief via Education Week:
Report: Changes are needed in teacher preparation, training
A report is calling for an overhaul of teacher-preparation programs, saying that some are inadequate. The Center for American Progress found that the programs should gauge teacher ability on value-added measures, in-class observations, improved educator assessments, and surveys and retention of graduates. The report also supports adopting common standards and expectations to measure teacher preparedness.
FM adds: Here is a link to the actual report, found on the CAP web site:

If you only want to read about the report or download the executive summary, go here:

** 2. CAST announces new content on their web site regarding Universal Design for Learning.
On their National Center on Universal Design for Learning, CAST presents guidelines and resources for educators who wish to use UDL principles.

and go to the UDL Guildelines and Resources. There are some useful resources listed for people with visual impairments.
** 3. From The Capitol Insider thearc.org comes this announcement:
DOJ announced plans to develop ADA regulations addressing the accessibility of websites, the provision of captioning and video description in movies shown in theaters, accessible equipment and furniture, and the ability of 9-1-1 centers to take text and video calls from individuals with disabilities. The announcements were in the form of advance notices of proposed rulemaking (ANPRMs), which provide information on the ADA issues and ask questions seeking comments and information from the public. Comments are due in January 2011. To see copies of the ANPRMs, go to http://www.ada.gov/anprm2010.htm.
** 4. From International Reading Association
To celebrate International Literacy Day on September 8, visit IRA's web site and download ideas and suggestions.

** 5. From CITEd (Center for Implementing Technology in Education)
An announcement came out from CITEd about new content posted on their web site regarding use of technology in schools, including AT for students with disabilities. Main site is:

By clicking on the link "For Teachers," a large list of topics can be found, including "Students with Special Needs." Some good resources listed here that students in our teacher prep programs can use.
** 6. From The Education Law Center (via the NICHCY newsletter) comes a policy brief on including students with disabilities in Pre-K programs:
The NICHCY newsletter included a short piece about this resource but it was easier to read from the Education Law Center site than from the newsletter. Here's the link:

Hi! CNIB sells a good book that I edited several years ago (2004) called A Strong Beginning: A Sourcebook for heawlth and education professionals working with young children who are visually impaired or blind. The TOC is attached, and chapter 10 is on VI and Movement, written by a CNIB Occupational Therapist, and reviewed by several key experts in the field. Here is the link to purchase the book, if you are interested. Chapter authors include Kevin Stewart, Tanni Anthony, Ann MacCuspie, Carol Farrenkopf, Duncan McGregor, and Deborah Chen. I have attached the TOC and a few other pages for a sneak peak. Here is the link to buy the book. Price is in Canadian dollars. Good luck with your course.
