Hi,
Hope everyone is having a great late spring--whether you are finishing up your school year, teaching summer school, doing other projects or just resting.

I happen to be teaching summer school right now.
3 questions regarding games:

  1. Can someone help me with accessible 2nd grade level math games for the computer? Auditory input plus visuals appropriate for a low vision child are what I'm looking for, if possible. (BTW, I already have Math Flash.)

  2. Can someone suggest accessible 2nd grade level math games for the iPad?
(Again, I am looking for sound-driven programs plus visual input appropriate for a low vision child.)
I have looked on ViA, but have only seen a couple programs that look interesting so far.

    3) How does one use the Refreshabraille to access games downloaded onto the iPad?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

    Janice

The refreshable braille device (RBD), once paired with the iPad, will display what VoiceOver (iOS screen reader) says.  You do not need to do anything other than pair the RBD with the iPad and turn on the RBD and VoiceOver.  The RBD has a set of commands that can be used to drive the iPad meaning that you no longer have to touch the iPad screen.

For a free complete reference guide (VoiceOver gestures, Bluetooth keyboard commands and RBD commands) can be found at:

http://support.sas.com/misc/accessibility/education/ios/quickref.html

A fun accessible iPad game is SAS Flash Cards.  There are literally thousands of games available, including a section on math, such as addition facts, subtraction facts, etc.  Teachers can quickly create their own games too!  There is an option of using pictures, so if a game was made with a picture as the main feature, a blind student would not be able to play that game; however, many low vision students can.  (Example, if a picture of a triangle is displayed without a written or verbal description, the totally blind student would not be able to identify the triangle.)

On the computer, you play the free Hark The Sound games.  http://harkthesound.org/  There are various games on this website, including some addition games.  Note:  You need Firefox or Chrome to play these games.

Have fun!
