Hi Friends,
We are engaging some parents regarding the transition from an abacus to a calculator. The student has mastered the abacus for basic facts up to multi-digit division and multiplication. Our team feels it is time to transition to a calculator b/c the kiddo internalized the concepts of long division and multiplication and we are trying to reduce the 5+ min per problem to do a problem in class (ex. 785 divided by 32 and 2,348 divided by 13).
We are wanting to know if there is any literature or research to help our team. We plan to continue using the abacus for new concepts such as fractions and prime factors, etc. but there is disagreement about the transition.
Thanks,
Our VI Team
