Hi All,

I have noticed the "Product Showcase" below in the AER Viewpoint for the past couple of weeks. I am curious if anyone has had the opportunity to work with this tactile reading system. While I think it has some interesting potential, I have concerns about its effectiveness and the promoter's use of inaccurate statistics on their website. A reporter form the Smithsonian interviewed me about ELIA. She asked if I knew anyone who had experience with this tactile reading system so I am reaching out to my colleagues in the field to see if anyone might help shed more light on the subject.

Please read the article, visit their web site and let's start a discussion about this topic.

Well friend and colleagues, I have jumped the gun and fired off an email before reading the rest of the articles in AER Viewpoint. It seems that they have also cited an article from Popular Science that brings out some other issues about ELIA. I have also been informed that a resolution on research ethics is being drafted for AER which will provide us some guidelines about what we provide in our organization's publication.

I hope my earlier message did not seem totally negative. As with most things there is a positive and a negative side and I would like to see our field discuss topics such as this, and the AER list is a great place to do it.

I’m dating myself and can’t remember the name of an earlier tactile
system, probably in the 70s or earlier. It was based on raised figures
similar to this, but I don’t think it ever really took off.  Today’s
technology would make producing a simple alphabet like this easier, but I
still wonder about the population that would be able to get this as a
usable system. If people were able to create the raised symbols themselves,
it would be easier for them to label and use daily. I can’t see this being
really viable for lengthy reading. That’s the reason for contracted
braille.

Just a few of my thoughts.

I’m dating myself and can’t remember the name of an earlier tactile system, probably in the 70s or earlier. It was based on raised figures similar to this, but I don’t think it ever really took off. Today’s technology would make producing a simple alphabet like this easier, but I still wonder about the population that would be able to get this as a usable system. If people were able to create the raised symbols themselves, it would be easier for them to label and use daily. I can’t see this being really viable for lengthy reading. That’s the reason for contracted braille. Just a few of my thoughts. Thanks for your messages.
I'm glad to hear there's some discussion of guidelines for what's
included in that Viewpoint posts (or I hope that's what you mean)
because I've seen several articles on technology, etc. that seemed
inappropriate for AER to be supporting or reporting, without including
some caveats.  I'm not sure who develops and 'approves' material sent
out as AER's "viewpoint" but more editorial review and guidelines seem
appropriate to me.

I am also somewhat concerned about AER promoting this Kickstarter
Campaign. Is this something that our professional organization should be
supporting without input from the membership?

Thanks in advance for your input,

I hope my earlier message did not seem totally negative. As with most

Subject: [AERNet] AER and the ELIA Frames Touch Font

Hi All,

*I have noticed the “Product Showcase” below in the AER Viewpoint for
the past couple of weeks. I am curious if anyone has had the opportunity to
work with this tactile reading system. While I think it has some
interesting potential, I have concerns about its effectiveness and the
promoter’s use of inaccurate statistics on their website. A reporter form
the Smithsonian interviewed me about ELIA. She asked if I knew anyone who
had experience with this tactile reading system so I am reaching out to my
colleagues in the field to see if anyone might help shed more light on the
subject. *

Please read the article, visit their web site and let’s start a
discussion about this topic.

Hi Susan,
It was Fishburne. It was designed to be easier (and bigger) than braille, but it was difficult to write. You had to emboss the shapes into thermoform sheets with this metal press thing—not at all easy. I think you could purchase pre-embossed sets of the letters and then stick them on things for a while. This is going back a couple of decades . . .

There’s also Moon, which is still used by a few people in the UK, but it has similar problems. I have a Moon “slate” but it’s really just a frame of squares and you’re supposed to draw the shape into plastic film. I had seen a Moon writing machine in the 1990s at RNIB, but it also meant you had to sort of “free write” the shape. Again, not easy.

There have been so many attempts in years past to create an “easy” tactile code, but they were all too big and too difficult to write. Here’s a cool photo from the Perkins Archives of some early proposed codes!

Thanks for letting me walk down Memory Lane with you, Susan!

If people were able to create the raised symbols themselves,  it would be easier for them to label and use daily. I can’t see this being really viable for lengthy reading. That’s the reason for contracted braille.

Just a few of my thoughts.

Subject: [AERNet] AER and the ELIA Frames Touch Font

Hi All,

I have noticed the “Product Showcase” below in the AER Viewpoint for the past couple of weeks. I am curious if anyone has had the opportunity to work with this tactile reading system. While I think it has some interesting potential, I have concerns about its effectiveness and the promoter’s use of inaccurate statistics on their website. A reporter form the Smithsonian interviewed me about ELIA. She asked if I knew anyone who had experience with this tactile reading system so I am reaching out to my colleagues in the field to see if anyone might help shed more light on the subject.

Please read the article, visit their web site and let’s start a discussion about this topic.

I am also somewhat concerned about AER promoting this Kickstarter Campaign. Is this something that our professional organization should be supporting without input from the membership?

the past couple of weeks.

The moon system was created shortly after Braille in the early 1900's.  How about the fischburn (may have spelled that wrong) tactile system to assist people with difficulty using Braille to do labeling?

Where does this company get its facts about being the only company to develop a printer to achieve tactile graphics? Or did I read that wrong?  I am the first person to wish that I could read print directly with speed and accuracy. However, how could I reproduce this inexpensively and efficiently?  Everyone does not have use of a computer and all of the software and hardware that goes with it. This is why I am so opposed to not teaching the use of a slate and stylus to children learning Braille.  That's like not teaching sighted children to use a pencil and a piece of paper to at least print.  That's like using a calculator and not teaching someone to do calculations in his/her head.  I was an avid optacon user because I could directly read print tactually and even get a concept of the layout of the print on a page.
I'm now getting off of my soap box.

That's the reason for contracted braille.

Just a few of my thoughts.

I'm now getting off of my soap box. purchase pre-embossed sets of the letters and then stick them on things for
a while. This is going back a couple of decades . . .

There’s also Moon, which is still used by a few people in the UK, but it
has similar problems. I have a Moon “slate” but it’s really just a frame of
squares and you’re supposed to draw the shape into plastic film. I had seen
a Moon writing machine in the 1990s at RNIB, but it also meant you had to
sort of “free write” the shape. Again, not easy.

There have been so many attempts in years past to create an “easy” tactile
code, but they were all too big and too difficult to write. Here’s a cool
photo from the Perkins Archives of some early proposed codes!
